Dementias have become a major public health concern due to their increasing prevalence and mounting costs. Early detection of individuals at risk before cognitive decline becomes disabling promises to reduce the family burden and individual suffering brought about by the disease. Medications, behavioral approaches, caregiver support makes up an expanding array of options for care. This activity will offer the practitioner an overview of emerging trends in both the interventions and ethics of dementia care. A nationally recognized faculty will discuss the characterization and treatment of the cognitive, behavioral and psychological signs and symptoms of dementia. The goal of this activity is to provide theoretical background, practical examples and didactic material which will lead to an interchange of experience between participants and faculty. Faculty will present a common clinical problem followed by a formal presentation and a question and answer session. |
|
The learning objectives for this activity are to assist practitioners to: Choose medication, considering the diagnosis and severity of dementia. Explain reasonable expectations for both symptomatic and functional outcomes. Recognize effective collaboration with the family and other caregivers. Identify preventive implications of the emerging treatments for dementia. Modify the setting of care to mesh with patient strengths and vulnerabilities. |
