Activity Goals and Needs
Certification is required by all states for the administration of intravenous sedation by dentists. The goal of this course is to enable and prepare dentists to incorporate and utilize the techniques of intravenous conscious sedation in their practice in order to help patients safely reach a stage where they are awake, comfortable and cooperative, without any anxiety.

This 90 hours curriculum includes didactic material related to patient evaluation and complications, pharmacology and physiology of agents, as well as psychological consideration o0f pain control in dentistry. Forty-five percent of the course is devoted to performing clinical detistry on appropriatly sedated patients.

This course satisfy American Dental Association Guidelines, New York State practice requirements and the practice requirements of all other states.

PRE-REQUISITE FOR THE COURSE
THE PARTICIPANT MUST HAVE DDS OR DMD DEGREE AND BE LICENSED TO PRACTICE DENTISTRY IN NEW YORK STATE. TO APPLY FOR NYS LICENSURE VISIT www.op.nysed.gov
Current certification for Cardiac Life Support, Mandated Training of Identification and Reporting Child Abuse and Malteatment and mandated training for Infection Contrrol and Barrier Precauions is required to apply for NYS licensure. Please submit copy of your current liability coverage with your registration. CD-Roms and textbook are provided to study at home, before attending the course.
Educational Objectives
At the conclusion of this educational activity, the participant should be able to:

Describe appropriate components of primary sedation assessment

Demonstrate appropriate use and interpretation of pulse oximetry and capnography for patients undergoing sedation

Describe and demonstrate appropriate intravenous catheter placement

Demonstrate safe and effective tilration of midazolam to a level of minimal sedation

Demonstrate proficiency in generating an anethesia record of care for patients undergoing intravenous sedation

Demonstrate an understanding of the pharmacology of drugs used in intravenous mininmal sedation and the pharmacology and appropriate use of reversal agent

Understand how to identify and initially manage major medical emergencies that patients may encounter while undergoing sedation

The New York State Educational Department has approved Montefiore Medical Center as a sponsor of continuing education courses in those subjects areas that the Department has determined are appropriate continuing professional education for dentists.

The State Board of Dentistry will accept its courses in such subject areas as contributing towards a registered dentist's continuing education requirements.

The course is approved for all levels of Academy of General Dentistry credit-mastership, fellowship and membership maintenance. AGD members will receive 90 hours of credit.
